Cover 4 Quarters

Breakdown

Cover 4 Quarters out of the Over Wide 4-2-5 Big Nickel is a zone shell defense that splits the deep field into four vertical quarters, using both safeties and both cornerbacks to eliminate big plays over the top. The two linebackers and slot defender hold underneath zones to take away shallow crossers and flat routes, making this a strong zone beater deterrent against four verticals and deep route combos. Primary read progression starts with the safeties keying the number two receiver, then the boundary corner sinking on any vertical release before the linebackers scan inside for drag or curl routes settling into their zone.

Defensive Reads

Watch the safeties pre-snap for depth and width, if they are shaded to a slot receiver expect them to key that route first at the snap. Post-snap, read the cornerbacks sinking on vertical releases, if a receiver stems inside they should pass him off to the safety and stay on top of anything breaking outside. This shell struggles against quick game and RPOs since the underneath zones can be stressed by stick and flat combos before the linebackers get depth. It shuts down four verticals, deep outs, and post-corner combos because both safeties have deep quarter help and can squeeze the seams. Beware of user lurk threats sitting the middle hook zone too long, mobile quarterbacks can scramble for yardage if the underneath defenders bite on route stems. Look for the slot defender to have flat responsibility, if he widens too fast a seam route can split the safety and corner in his quarter.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or obvious pass situations where you expect four verticals, deep crossers, or play-action shots downfield.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running two receivers to one side since your safety has to key that number two man to diagnose run versus pass.

Use this as a changeup after showing Cover 3 Sky or Cover 1 Hole earlier in the drive so the quarterback has to process a different shell at the snap.

Hot route the underneath linebackers into a shallow buzz or spy if you see a lot of drag and shallow cross combos beating your zone.

Pair this with Sam Blitz 3 or Will Blitz 3 later in a series so the offense respects the possibility of pressure out of the same personnel and alignment.

Play this heavy on third and long since the four deep defenders take away comebacks and posts that live in that zone spacing.
