Breakdown

Sam Blitz 3 is a five-man pressure package out of the 4-2-5 Over Wide set that sends the Sam linebacker off the edge while dropping into a Cover 3 shell behind it. The three deep defenders split the field into thirds while the underneath zone defenders spot drop to take away quick hitters, making this a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure without fully exposing the defense to big plays over the top. Because this is a defensive play call, there is no route progression to read, the primary key is diagnosing whether the offensive line picks up the extra rusher or if the Sam gets a clean lane to the quarterback before the protection can adjust.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back and tight end alignment pre-snap to identify if they are staying in to block, which tells you whether the Sam blitz will have a free run or get picked up Key the offensive tackle and guard splits on the side of the blitz, tighter splits usually mean the offense is anticipating an edge rusher and will slide protection that way Post-snap, track the quarterback's eyes for a fast three step drop, which signals a hot route or quick concept designed to beat the underneath zone vacated by the blitzing linebacker This play struggles against quick game and slot fade or stick concepts that attack the zone vacated by the Sam linebacker before the rush arrives Cover 3 beats most vertical shots but is vulnerable to seam routes and deep crossers if the deep third defenders bite on play action, so stay disciplined with eyes on the quarterback rather than the running back

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to hold protection and try to time up a deep shot, since the Cover 3 shell behind the blitz limits explosive plays even if the pressure is picked up

Use pre-snap motion or a defensive shift to disguise the Sam blitz as a standard Cover 3 look so the quarterback cannot get a pre-snap key on the pressure

If the offense shows empty or spread formations, consider spying the underneath zone defenders manually to jump quick game and RPO reads that attack the vacated area

Pair this with Cover 3 Sky and Will Blitz 3 in the same set to keep quarterbacks guessing about which linebacker is coming and which side the pressure originates from

User the Sam linebacker yourself off the edge if you want to control the rush lane and counter offensive tackle chip protection or slide protection that overloads one side
