3 High

SpecialistsRLERRERDTNTSUBLBSLCB

Overview

3 High is the disguise hub of the 4-2-5 Big Nickel package. Instead of showing a two deep or single high shell, this set aligns three defenders at depth pre-snap, which forces the offense to declare its read before the ball is snapped and hides whether you are dropping into Cover 3 Match, spinning down into Tampa 2, or rotating a safety to the edge on a blitz. The front stays a true four man line (RLE, RRE, RDT, NT) with only two linebackers, and the Big Nickel substitution puts a bigger nickel body on the field with SUBLB and SLCB tags available, so you keep an extra sub defender who can handle tight ends and slot backs without giving up run fit integrity.

Strengths

  • Every coverage in the set opens from the same three high picture, so 3 Double Cloud, Cover 3 Match, and Cover 4 Quarters all look identical pre-snap and kill audible fishing from your opponent
  • 3 Double Cloud gives you two cloud corners squatting on the flat while keeping three deep, which is one of the best answers in the game to flood and corner route combos on the boundary
  • Cover 2 Lurk and Tampa 2 both deliver a middle field robber you can user control, choking crossers, deep overs, and seam shots that normally punish two high looks
  • Edge Blitz 3, Edge Blitz 2, and Hot Blitz 3 bring pressure off the edge while still retaining at least two deep defenders, so you can heat up the quarterback without exposing the post
  • The Big Nickel personnel keeps SUBLB and SLCB on the field, giving you better man coverage grades against tight ends and slot backs than a base 4-3 nickel package

Weaknesses

  • Only two linebackers on the field means inside zone, duo, and lead runs at the A and B gaps can get downhill fast, especially if you drop the NT out of the play with a blitz call
  • Starting three defenders at depth softens the run fit even further, so opponents who read three high will just pound the ball on second and medium
  • LB Blitz 0 has zero deep help by design, and any user who recognizes the rotation can hot route a receiver on a streak or slot fade and win instantly
  • Cover 4 Quarters and Cover 3 Match both concede the underneath flat and out routes, which lets a short passing attack drive the field on curl flat and stick combos
  • Edge Blitz 3 and Blitz DT Pop rush with limited numbers, so a good offensive line with a running back staying in to block will give the quarterback a clean pocket and let him work the flood side

Usage Tips

Live in 3 Double Cloud and 3 Double Sky on third and long, then rotate to Cover 2 Lurk from the same shell so your opponent cannot tell which side the corner is squatting

Use Cover 3 Match and Cover 2 Match against opponents who lean on mesh, drive, and crossing route combos, since the match logic passes off routes cleanly instead of chasing

User the middle deep defender in Tampa 2 and shade toward whichever side has the bunch or trips look, letting the play art handle the boundary

Mix Edge Blitz 2 and Hot Blitz 3 on early downs to get free pressure without selling out, and save LB Blitz 0 for obvious passing situations where you already know the protection

If your opponent starts running into the two man box, audible to Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 2 Match so your safeties are closer to the fit, and manually shade coverage underneath before the snap

Blitz DT Pop is your best interior twist call against an offense that likes to sit in the pocket and hit deep concepts, since it collapses the middle of the pass rush
