3 Double Cloud is a zone coverage play out of the 4-2-5 3 High set that pairs two cloud corner drops with a three safety shell over the top, giving you a two high look disguised presnap that rotates into single high or stays three deep depending on the call. The corners sink to cloud technique to squeeze the flats and force underneath throws, while the linebackers wall off shallow crossers and the deep safeties split the field into thirds. This is a zone beater that shuts down quick game and hitch routes to the boundary, with the primary read being the flat to deep quarter relationship on either side, so you key the corner's cloud drop first and then work back to the safety rotation to diagnose which third is vacated.
Watch the safety alignment presnap, if all three safeties are showing depth without cheating to a side, expect the defense to hold the three deep shell rather than rotate to man. Key the corner's initial step at the snap, a hard cloud drop toward the flat signals the defense is squeezing quick game and will be vulnerable to double moves or deep outs behind the drop. This play struggles against four verticals or seam shots, since the cloud drop pulls the corner away from deep responsibility and puts stress on the safety to cover the vertical seam alone. Track the linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink too early into zone drops they open a throwing window underneath for drag routes and slants before the cloud corners can close. Look for user pressure off the edge, since the 4-2-5 personnel sacrifices size up front, and a well timed nano blitz combined with this coverage can leave the quarterback without a clean pocket to exploit the zone.
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect the offense to test the flats with quick game or bubble screens, since the cloud corners are built to jump those routes immediately.
Presnap, identify if the offense has trips or bunch to one side, then shade your corner cloud drop toward that side to prevent a natural leverage advantage for the receiver.
User the underneath linebacker to rob the middle read of any crossing route, since the zone shell leaves a soft spot behind the linebacker level if he sits too flat footed.
Combine this with Cover 3 Match or Cover 4 Quarters in the same set to disguise your shell presnap, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball an extra half second while your corners bait the quick throw.
Sequence this after Edge Blitz 2 or Edge Blitz 3 so the offense respects pressure first, then drop into 3 Double Cloud to sit on the hot route or checkdown they trained themselves to expect.
