Edge Blitz 3 is a five-man pressure package out of the 3 High shell in the 4-2-5 that sends both edge defenders off the corner while the back-end rotates into a Cover 3 shell to protect against the deep pass. The blocking scheme for offenses facing this look must account for the widened rushers, since this is a defensive play designed to collapse the pocket quickly and force the quarterback into a hurried decision. The primary read for the defense is the quarterback's eyes and the running back's release, since Cover 3 leaves the middle of the field vulnerable to backs leaking out against slower linebackers who have to both blitz and cover.
Watch the offensive line splits and running back alignment pre-snap, since tight splits and a back cheating to the blitz side often signal they expect pressure and will chip or double the edge rusher. Key the quarterback's drop depth after the snap, a quick three-step drop means the blitz is likely getting picked up cleanly and the underneath zone defenders need to jump hot routes immediately. This play beats offenses that rely on five-man protection with no chip help, since the extra rusher wins outside contain and forces an early throw into the Cover 3 defenders sitting in the underneath zones. It gets exposed by max protect or six-man protection schemes paired with deep crossing routes, since the rush gets picked up and the thin underneath coverage cannot hold up against sustained route combos. Track any tight end or back who releases late into the flat or seam, since Cover 3 leaves a natural void between the underneath zone and deep thirds that quarterbacks target against this exact blitz look.
Call this on third and long or in two-minute situations where the offense is likely to hold protection and take a deep shot, since the extra rusher creates favorable one-on-one matchups off the edge.
Identify pre-snap whether the offense is in a max protect look with extra blockers, and if so consider bailing into Cover 4 Quarters instead to avoid getting gashed underneath.
User the strong side edge rusher to close the gap to the quarterback fastest and manually spy the running back's release path if you see check release protection at the snap.
Mix this in after running 3 Double Cloud or 3 Double Sky earlier in the series so the offense sees the same 3 High shell pre-snap and cannot key the blitz off safety depth alone.
Against empty or spread formations, hot route the underneath defenders to shallow crossers and stick with the base Cover 3 shell so the blitz does not leave a hole for quick game beaters.
