Over 3 Sting is a Cover 3 zone blitz look out of the Over Flex 3-3-5 Big Nickel set that combines a line stunt with three-deep, four-under zone coverage. The two outside curl/flat defenders squat and drive on the flats while the deep thirds carry vertical routes, and the middle hook defender walls off any drag or dig working through the intermediate zone. Up front, the four-man line runs a stunt (twist) to generate pressure without a true blitz, so the read progression is flat to hook to deep third as the underneath defenders react to the quarterback's eyes and the stunt works to collapse the pocket.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties sit deep and the corners press outside leverage, this is textbook Cover 3 alignment that Over 3 Sting is built to disguise while adding the line stunt. Post-snap, key the underneath hook defender first since he is responsible for taking away any drag or crosser working through the middle of the field. Watch the two flat defenders squat and drive on any quick out or flat route, this coverage shell eats stick and speed-out concepts that man beaters typically exploit. If the offense audibles into a vertical stack or four verticals concept, the three deep defenders must gain depth immediately or seams can split the zone before the stunt gets home. Time the stunt with the snap count so the looping defender does not get picked off by pulling guards on run plays that use down blocks, since a mistimed stunt creates a running lane for gap schemes.
Usage Tips
Use this as a passing-down call on second or third and medium when you want zone coverage disguise with an added interior pass rush wrinkle.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running trips or bunch to one side and check the flat defender assignment to make sure the stunt side lines up with the boundary you expect the quarterback to work.
Because the stunt only rushes four, this play holds up well against max protect and play-action rollouts since you still have three deep defenders and four underneath zone drops to squeeze the picture.
Pair Over 3 Sting with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the stunt off the coverage shell, keeping the pre-snap look identical.
Avoid calling this against heavy screen tendencies since the stunt can widen rush lanes that offensive linemen release into for perimeter screens.
