Over 3 Sting is a Cover 3 zone blitz look out of the 3-3-5 Over Flex set that combines a line stunt up front with a three deep, four under zone shell behind it. The two outside cornerbacks sink into deep thirds while the deep safety in the middle bails to the deep third, and the underneath zone is covered by the curl-flat defenders on the outside with the two inside linebackers and the SAM working shallow hook and curl zones. Up front the four rushers execute a line stunt, crossing gaps to confuse the offensive line while the defense stays sound in zone coverage behind it, making this primarily a zone beater killer designed to disguise pressure without sacrificing the three deep shell.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify if the offense has trips or bunch to one side, since the line stunt timing can be exploited by quick screens if the flat defender to that side is not disciplined. Key the offensive tackles at the snap, if they lunge or overset to handle the stunt you should expect an immediate hole for the interior rusher to close on the quarterback. Postsnap, watch for the quarterback attacking the seams between the deep thirds and the underneath zone droppers, that soft spot in the middle hook zone is the primary vulnerability against good route combos. This call shuts down man beater concepts and rub routes since it stays in zone integrity, but it is susceptible to well timed play action rollouts that pull the underneath defenders out of position before the stunt gets home. Watch the running back out of the backfield on delayed releases, since the stunt can leave a linebacker late getting to his zone assignment if he is occupied reading the line movement first.

Usage Tips

Use Over 3 Sting on early downs or second and medium when you want to disguise pressure while staying safe against play action, since the three deep shell holds up if the stunt gets picked up late.

Pre-snap, check if the offense is sliding protection toward the stunt side, if they are not you will win with the extra gap exchange and get a free rusher off the edge or through the A gap.

Combine this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match earlier in a series so the shell looks identical presnap, then bring Over 3 Sting to punish quarterbacks who are keying zone drops off the linebacker depth.

Hot route the flat defenders to squeeze underneath if you are worried about quick hitters and RPO game, since the line stunt naturally slows down the quick game reads and you can afford tighter underneath drops.

Avoid calling this against heavy max protect empty looks where the stunt has no angle to work with, in that case swap to Hot Blitz 3 or Edge Blitz 0 for more direct pressure.
