Cover 4 Quarters is a zone coverage shell out of the Over Flex 3-3-5 Big Nickel set, splitting the deep field into four vertical quarters with the two deep safeties and both outside cornerbacks. The diagram shows four deep defenders sinking to their landmarks while the underneath zone consists of two hook/curl droppers and a green robber-style defender sitting in the middle of the field, with the four defenders showing blitz triggers at the second level before dropping into their zones. This is a zone beater against vertical route combos since it forces receivers into a bracket read, and the primary progression for the defense is: outside corners squeeze verticals to the safeties, safeties read number two before committing deep, and the underneath defenders wall off crossers and shallow in-cuts.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: if both safeties are aligned at 10 to 12 yards over the numbers with corners in soft outside shade, you are almost certainly seeing quarters, so key the number two receiver to determine who each safety should bracket. Post-snap, watch the outside cornerbacks for their trail technique on verticals, since they should stay in phase with number one while safeties rob any inside breaking route from number two. This shell is vulnerable to switch releases and rub routes at the snap that confuse the bracket rules, along with quick RPO reads that attack the flat before the underneath zone defenders settle. It shuts down four verticals and deep post/corner combos cold because of the four deep defenders splitting the field evenly. Watch the middle robber defender's landmark, since if he sits too shallow he opens up a seam throw to a tight end running a bender route between the safeties.
Usage Tips
Show this look pre-snap against offenses that stack two or more receivers to one side, since Quarters is built to bracket vertical stems from number one and number two receivers. Use the flat/curl defenders to squeeze mesh concepts and drag routes before they threaten the seams, then trust your deep four to stay on top of go routes and posts. This play shines on third and medium to third and long when the offense is likely to test the middle of the field with a dig or post/wheel combo. Disguise the middle robber defender presnap by mugging him near the line to bait a hot route or protection check, then drop him late to jump in-breaking routes. Pair this call with Cover 3 Match or Cover 6 Willie in your play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key the safety rotation and start guessing between quarters and a three deep shell.
