Hot Blitz 3 is a five-man pressure package out of the 3-3-5 Over Flex Big Nickel set that drops into a Cover 3 shell behind the rush. The diagram shows four rushers with arrows crashing downhill off the edges and interior gaps while a fifth defender blitzes off the slot, leaving three deep zone defenders splitting the field and two underneath zone droppers (one flat, one hook/curl) to protect against quick and intermediate throws. This is a zone blitz built to disrupt the pocket quickly while still holding three deep thirds, so the primary read for the defense is to affect the quarterback pre-throw and force the ball into the underneath zones where the hook defender or flat defender can close on it.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if the offense has extra protectors such as a tight end or running back staying in to block, which confirms the offense expects pressure and may signal a hot route or quick throw underneath. Watch the slot or nickel alignment before the snap since the blitzer shown coming from that area needs a clean angle to the quarterback, and stacked or bunch formations can slow his path. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes toward the flat or hook zones first, since those are the shallow areas your underneath defenders are responsible for covering. This call is vulnerable to hot routes into the vacated intermediate middle since only two underneath zone defenders are covering the entire width of the field. It beats slower developing man concepts and play-action rollouts because the extra rusher disrupts timing before routes fully develop, but it can be exploited by quick slants, screens, or hitch routes thrown before the pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a play-action pass or a slower developing dropback concept, since the extra rusher pressures timing-based routes. Identify pre-snap if the offense is in a heavy protection look with extra blockers, because that tells you Hot Blitz 3 will still get home against man or half-man protection schemes. Use the blitzing slot defender as your user-controlled threat and manually spy or time his blitz to hit the quarterback before he can climb the pocket. Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match earlier in a series so quarterbacks cannot distinguish your five-man pressure look from your standard three-deep shells based on pre-snap alignment. Avoid calling this against empty or spread formations with quick game concepts, since the underneath defenders are stretched thin covering flat and hook zones with only two shallow defenders.
