Breakdown

Nickel Sim 3 is a simulated pressure package out of the 3-3-5 Over Flex set that shows a five-man box look before dropping into Cover 3 zone shell behind it. Pre-snap the diagram shows four defenders at the line with red blitz arrows crossing through the interior gaps, while both underneath zone defenders (tan ovals) sink into curl-to-flat or hook zones and the deep thirds are covered by two cornerbacks and a deep safety. This is a zone-based simulated pressure call, not a true blitz, since the extra rushers are replaced by dropping linebackers, so the primary read is the quarterback's eyes: bait him into thinking there is a numbers advantage up front, then rely on the underneath zone defenders sitting on crossers and shallow routes while the deep thirds erase anything vertical.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for stacked or bunch receivers to the boundary, since this simulated pressure struggles versus quick rub routes that beat zone defenders before they can sink into their landmarks. Key the running back's release, if he stays in to block or leaks to the flat the underneath zone defender shown sinking from the second level should be there to greet him. Watch for the offense calling hot routes into the middle hook zone vacated by the blitzing defenders, this is the primary vulnerability since the diagram shows only two shallow zone droppers covering a wide underneath area. Post-snap, identify if the quarterback recognizes the sim pressure and holds the ball, that is your cue to trust the coverage rather than user-blitzing out of your zone assignment. This call is most exploitable by play-action rollouts and levels concepts that stretch the shallow zone horizontally, so avoid it versus offenses that consistently attack with quick out and flat combinations.

Usage Tips

Use Nickel Sim 3 on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to call quick-game concepts against what looks like pressure.

Pre-snap, show blitz with your alignment to bait the quarterback into a hot route or checkdown, since the underneath zone drops are designed to jump those throws.

Do not manually spin the extra defenders into the box, let the simulated pressure disguise do its job, and use your user-controlled defender to sit in the shallow crossing lane or spy the running back.

Mix this call with Cover 3 Match and Cover 3 Sky from the same set so the offense cannot key on your shell purely from formation, forcing them to guess between true zone drops and simulated pressure every snap.

Avoid calling this against heavy shotgun spread teams that throw quick out routes to the flat, since the flat defender has depth on the diagram and can be beaten by a fast snap and throw before the zone sets.
