This is a zone beater against man concepts and a solid answer to four verticals or seam shots, with the primary read progression going from the deep middle safety reading the number two receiver's vertical stem before working down to the underneath flow and matching any crossers or flat routes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since Cover 9 shows a three deep safety look that can bait quarterbacks into throwing seams that are actually covered. Watch for offenses trying to overload one side with three receivers, since the underneath zone can get outnumbered if you do not shift a linebacker over before the snap. Post-snap, key the number two receiver's release, if he pushes vertical the deep defenders should widen and stay on top to eliminate the seam throw. This shell shuts down four verticals and deep post shots but is vulnerable to quick game and shallow crossers if your underneath zone defenders drop too deep too fast. User the middle linebacker or nickel defender in the shallow hook zone to jump any drag or spot route that the quarterback tries to use as a checkdown against the deep shell.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and long when you expect the offense to test the seams or run four verticals against your Big Nickel personnel.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense has stacked or bunched receivers to the trips side since Cover 9 has help over the top but can be stressed underneath if you do not adjust your zone drops.
Use this play after showing Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 3 Match earlier in the series so the deep third look disguises the extra deep defender and keeps the quarterback guessing on shell rotation.
Hot route your underneath linebackers into tighter hook zones if you are facing a heavy drag or crosser tendency, since the base drops leave some cushion in the intermediate middle.
Pair this with Cover 4 Drop Field or Cover 6 Willie in the same set to keep quarterbacks off balance between three deep and four deep shells without changing personnel.
