Edge Blitz 0 is a five-man pressure package out of the 3-3-5 Over Flex Big Nickel look that sends both edge rushers along with an interior blitzer straight downhill at the quarterback while the back end plays straight Cover 0 man with no safety help. The diagram shows all five underneath defenders converging on the box with no deep zone drops, confirming this is true zero blitz with every remaining defender locked in man coverage across the formation. Because there is no deep help, the primary read is presnap identification of the free rusher and the matchup you like on an island, then getting the ball out immediately since this is designed to win before the quarterback can climb the pocket.
Defensive Reads
Presnap, identify the running back and inline tight end alignment since any check release option on the blitz side is the first outlet the offense will target against zero coverage. Key the offensive line splits and depth of the quarterback in the pocket to confirm if the protection is sliding toward your overload side, which tells you where the free rusher will come from. Postsnap, watch for any receiver working a quick out or hitch route within three yards of the line since that is the built in answer to zero blitz pressure. This call gets shredded by quick game concepts, screens, and any offense with a hot route to a flat route against the blitzing side, so avoid it if the opponent has shown quick game tendencies. It dominates against seven step drops, play action shots, and offenses that hold the ball to let deep routes develop, since your rush should arrive before those routes break open.
Usage Tips
Only call this on early downs or when you have a hunch the offense is calling a long developing shot play, since any hot route beater or quick game concept can gash a true zero blitz.
Check the receiver splits and motion presnap to confirm the offense has not diagnosed the blitz, because a bunch or stack alignment can create natural rub routes that beat man coverage instantly.
User the most dangerous free rusher off the edge and spy any mobile quarterback tendency with your user controlled defender to prevent scrambles that kill the blitz design.
Pair this call with Cover 1 LB Blitz or Cover 1 SS Blitz earlier in the sequence so the offense sees a similar presnap picture but cannot key the total commitment of the zero look.
Save Edge Blitz 0 for third and long or two minute situations where the offense is likely to take a deep drop, giving your rushers time to convert speed to power on the tackles.
