Your primary read as the blitz caller is the offensive tackle to running back matchup on the play side, if the back stays in to chip or block, you have a numbers advantage and need to trust the rush to get home before working any user contain responsibilities.
Check pre-snap for the running back alignment, a pass protecting back neutralizes one blitzer and forces you to win with the remaining four rushers. Identify whether the offense is running max protect with tight ends staying in, since this eliminates most zone beater route combos but leaves you vulnerable to play action rollouts if the edge blitzers overrun the pocket. Watch the tight end release, if he runs a quick flat or drag route he is exploiting the vacated underneath zone left by the blitzing linebackers. Post snap, key the deep middle safety rotation to confirm the Cover 3 shell is holding, a busted rotation leaves the deep middle exposed to vertical shots. This pressure gets shut down by quick game concepts like slants and hitches thrown before the rush arrives, so avoid calling it against offenses that consistently beat you with a fast three step passing game.
Call this on third and medium to third and long when you have identified a pass alignment and want to force a quick, inaccurate throw before the protection sets.
Check the running back alignment pre-snap, if he is set to block, both mike and sam blitzers should win their one on one matchups against the offensive line.
Use this in sequence with Cover 3 Sim Pressure and Fire Man to disguise your pressure package, all three plays share a similar pre-snap look but send different rushers.
User the strong side flow linebacker on the snap to close the edge against scrambling quarterbacks and mobile rollout designs.
Avoid calling this against empty backfield sets or heavy trips formations since it opens up quick hitters and screens with only three underneath defenders.
