Cover 1 Hole is a man-under, single-high defensive call out of the Over Wide 2-5 set that adds a robber defender sitting in the middle of the field underneath. Five defenders play tight man coverage on receivers while the free safety holds deep middle and the "hole" defender (typically a linebacker or nickel) reads the quarterback's eyes to jump shallow crossers, drags, and slants. This is a man beater killer against spot concepts and a strong blitz-disguise look, since the hole defender can be user-controlled to bait throws into the middle of the field before closing on the ball.
Read the quarterback's shoulders and eyes immediately after the snap since the hole defender lives on jumping in-breaking routes thrown to the middle of the field. Watch for stacked or bunch receiver alignments pre-snap, which can create natural rubs against your man defenders and open picks on shallow crossers. Identify if the offense is running deep vertical routes or double moves, since your single-high safety has no help and can get beat over the top if the underneath hole defender bites too early. Beware of running plays or draws when you send extra pressure, since Cover 1 Hole leaves light numbers in the box against inside zone or power runs. Watch out for user-controlled receivers breaking off their route stems against your man corners, since Cover 1 leaves each cornerback isolated with no zone help outside the hole defender's shallow drop.
Check the pre-snap alignment for a single deep safety before the snap to confirm you are in a true Cover 1 shell and not disguising into zone. User the hole defender and manually walk him toward the offense's strongest underneath route, then react once the quarterback commits. Use this call on third and short to medium situations where offenses lean on quick game and shallow crossers, since the extra underneath defender erases those throws. Mix this in with Cover 1 Sting Wk and Cover 1 Robber from the same set so opposing quarterbacks cannot key on hole defender placement pre-snap. Against trips or bunch formations, shade your user control toward the boundary since the hole defender's zone naturally covers the field side crossing routes.
