Cover 2 Man is a hybrid coverage out of the Over Wide 2-5 Base 4-3 set that pairs man coverage underneath with two deep safeties splitting the field. The two cornerbacks and linebackers lock onto their assigned receivers while the safeties sit deep to cap any vertical shots down the middle or up the seams. This is a zone beater on the back end but a man beater underneath, so the primary read progression starts with the deep safeties: if they bite on a play fake or crash the run fit, attack the deep middle, otherwise work your rub routes and pick concepts to shake man coverage before checking down to the flat or backfield outlet.
Read the offensive formation pre-snap for stack or bunch sets, since rub routes and mesh concepts are the primary counter to the man coverage underneath in this call Key the running back release out of the backfield, since man defenders can get picked if they do not fight through traffic on crossing routes near the line of scrimmage Watch for the deep safeties biting on double moves or play-action rollouts, since Cover 2 Man is vulnerable to any route that manipulates the safety before breaking vertically behind him User the strong side safety to help against corner routes and deep outs from the slot, since that route breaks right into the seam between man coverage and the safety shell This shell shuts down quick game and shallow crossers thanks to tight man coverage, but struggles against four verticals or any concept that clears out one deep safety with a double move, leaving the middle of the field exposed
Use this call on third and medium to third and long when offenses are likely to run vertical stacks or mesh concepts designed to pick man defenders at the second level
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is showing a bunch or stack alignment since those formations are built to rub off man defenders, and consider a user flip to your best man corner onto the primary slot threat
Hot route your flat defenders to sink slightly deeper than usual since the deep safeties already have help over the top, this tightens the underneath passing lanes against drag and out routes
Pair this call with Cover 3 Sim Pressure or Cover 1 Sting Wk in the same set to disguise your shell, since all three start with similar safety depth before rotating differently after the snap
Avoid calling this against heavy trips or four verticals looks unless you user the deep safety to the trips side, since the single high helper on the backside can get exposed on a go route sideline fade
