Cover 3 Sim Pressure is a four man rush disguise blitz out of the Over Wide 2-5 look that drops eight into coverage after showing pressure at the line. It sends a four man rush from unconventional angles (often a defensive end and a linebacker crossing paths on a stunt) while dropping the other three linebackers and both corners into a standard Cover 3 shell with three deep zones and four underneath zones. This is a zone based, sim pressure concept designed to confuse offensive line protection and quarterback pre-snap reads without actually sacrificing coverage numbers. The primary read progression as the defender is to identify the rush lane conflict up front first, then work your deep third responsibility while staying aware of the underneath curl to flat zones where quarterbacks like to attack with quick game.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment since Cover 3 Sim Pressure keeps a two high look before rotating to single high at the snap, which can bait quarterbacks into throwing to a deep third they think is open Watch for the offense sliding protection toward the sim pressure rush lane, which tells you they have identified the stunt and you may need to user the free rusher manually to still generate pressure This coverage shell shuts down deep out and comeback routes to the sideline because the deep third defenders sit on top of those breaks, so expect quarterbacks to check down to underneath zones instead Man beater route combos like slot fades and rub routes are less effective here since this is a zone shell, but be alert for high low reads in the flat and curl zones since sim pressure gives up a hair more time for those windows to develop Post snap, key the running back and tight end releasing into the pattern since they are the first hot read against sim pressure if the quarterback feels the four man rush and needs a quick outlet before the deep coverage fully rotates
Call this on early downs or second and medium when the offense is likely to run base concepts and has not yet seen your pressure disguise this drive
Show a standard four man box pre-snap and avoid manually shifting defenders too much so the quarterback cannot diagnose the sim pressure before the snap
Use this as a change of pace after running Cover 1 Robber or Cover 4 Quarters so the quarterback has to respect both true blitzes and coverage shells from the same personnel
If you need to spy a mobile quarterback, hot route the middle linebacker to a shallow zone or spy assignment instead of letting him blitz through the sim pressure gap
Pair this with Double CB Blitz in your call sheet rotation so opponents cannot key on corner alignment to diagnose whether you are bringing extra pressure or dropping into the Cover 3 shell
Avoid calling this against empty formations since the sim pressure rush lanes are less effective when there is no run threat to hold linebackers
