Texans HB Lead out of Weak I Slot lines up with a fullback in front of the HB, a TE and slot receiver to the trips side, and a single WR aligned wide. The FB leads through the hole as the primary blocker while the offensive line executes a power/iso blocking scheme, sealing the point of attack so the HB can follow the FB's lead block downhill. This is a straightforward power run play with no route combos or play-action elements, and the primary read progression is simply following the fullback's block, reading the iso blocker's path and cutting off the FB's shoulder into the first crease created up front.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the number of defenders in the box: light boxes with six or fewer defenders are prime opportunities to hammer this play for consistent gains. Watch linebacker alignment relative to the FB's expected lead path, if the Mike linebacker is shaded to the play side and reading the FB quickly, the iso block loses its advantage. Look for safeties creeping down into the box pre-snap, which signals run support and can shut down the natural crease this play tries to create. Post-snap, key on whether a user-controlled defender jumps the FB's block immediately, since that indicates the defense is sniffing out the iso concept and you should set up a counter or misdirection play from this same set. Beware of defenses stacking the box in run-heavy personnel like 4-3 or 46 fronts with linebackers reading downhill fast, as this eliminates the lead blocker's ability to create a clean lane.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel rather than nickel or dime packages.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if the Mike and Will are stacked tight to the box, the FB lead block will have less room to work, so consider audibling to HB Blast or HB Option instead.
If the defense shows a run blitz or overload look with extra defenders crashing downhill, look to bounce the HB outside off the FB's block rather than forcing it into the teeth of the front.
Pair this play with PA Boot Slide or PA Deep Threats later in a series once you have established the lead run, since defenders keying on the FB's blocking path become vulnerable to play-action rollouts off the same look.
Avoid calling this against stacked eight-man fronts or heavy blitz packages that key the FB immediately, since the iso blocking scheme needs numbers advantage at the point of attack to be effective.
