HB Slip Screen out of the Weak I Slot formation shows a classic RB screen shell designed to slow down aggressive pass rushes and blitz-heavy defenses. Up top, the outside receiver runs a deep corner route while the slot man runs a crossing dig, and on the other side the two receivers stack a vertical seam and an out route to hold linebackers and safeties deep or flow them away from the flow of the screen. The HB slips out to the flat behind a wall of linemen releasing downfield to block, making this a true screen play (not RPO or play-action) with the primary read progression starting and ending with the HB in the flat, only working to the deeper routes if the screen is jumped or blitzed clean.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive linemen and edge rushers crashing hard upfield off the snap, that aggression is exactly what turns this screen into a big play so contain discipline is critical Key any user-controlled defender spying or lurking near the line of scrimmage, since a smart user can jump the screen route and blow it up for a loss if they read the offensive line's soft release Check safety depth and linebacker drops before the snap, deep two-high shells with linebackers dropping into short zones are the best counter because it puts extra defenders in the throwing lane to the flat Man coverage teams that blitz five or six defenders are the most vulnerable since fewer defenders remain to rally to the screen once it develops Post-snap, track whether linebackers stay square and read backfield action instead of biting on the play fake, disciplined backers who stay home in coverage can close down the HB before blockers set up in front of him
Usage Tips
Call this play against defenses showing pressure indicators like overloaded fronts, walked-up linebackers, or nickel and dime blitz packages since the blockers releasing downfield will have a numbers advantage in space
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the defensive line to confirm they are not sitting in a screen-savvy soft zone, since disciplined zone defenders can sit on the screen and blow it up before it develops
Hot route the backside vertical and out combo into quick hitches or shallow drags if you expect man coverage across the board so you have a faster underneath outlet if the screen is not there
Pair this with HB Blast or HB Option earlier in a series to sell inside run action, then dial up the Slip Screen to punish defenders keying run fits and flowing hard toward the box
Best called on early downs or in obvious blitz-down situations like 3rd and short to medium, and cycle it with Bubble Screen so opponents cannot key on personnel tendencies
