PA Flood out of Weak I Slot with 21 personnel shows a play-action fake to the backfield before the QB works a three-level flood concept to the offense's left. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route stretching the sideline, the slot runs an out breaking route to the flag area at intermediate depth, and a third route flattens to the sideline underneath, stacking the same side vertically. On the backside, a single receiver runs a vertical route up the numbers as a hold-up option while the fullback checks into the flat off the play-action fake. This is a play-action flood concept built to beat Cover 3 by overloading one third of the field with three route levels, so the primary read progresses high to low: corner route first, then the out/flag, then the underneath flat.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and rotation; a single high safety shaded to the flood side signals Cover 3 and tells you the corner route should win over the top. Watch the flat defender and slot cornerback leverage; if they sink too deep on the play-action fake, the underneath flat route will be wide open for an easy checkdown. Post-snap, key the flat and curl-to-flat defenders for a user lurk threat sitting on the out route, since a smart user player can jump that intermediate throw and bait a pick. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the flood side is where this play struggles most, since the corner route has less room to work against a trailing man defender. If linebackers show blitz depth pre-snap or crash hard at the snap, the play-action fake buys extra time, but you must get the ball out quickly to the flat before extra rushers close the pocket.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or medium distance to sell the run fake convincingly since the Weak I look with 21 personnel naturally threatens HB Blast and Texans HB Lead from the same formation.
Before the snap, identify whether the safety is rotating to the flood side or staying in a two-high shell, since a rotated safety can jump the corner route and force you to the intermediate out.
If the defense shows Cover 3 with the corner sitting on the flat, throw the corner route first since it will beat the deep third defender over the top.
Use hot routes to convert the underneath flat route into a quick check-down against blitz looks, especially if you see linebackers crashing downhill off the play-action fake.
