Dagger out of Weak I Slot with 21 personnel stacks a deep dig from the slot receiver (yellow) underneath a vertical clear-out route from the outside receiver on the same side, while the backside X receiver runs a corner breaking route (red) to occupy that half of the field. The inline TE or slot defender releases on a shallow crossing route (blue) working the middle underneath, giving the quarterback a layered read from deep to short. This is a classic man and zone beater: the vertical route pulls coverage off the dig, the dig sits in the vacated middle void versus zone, and the crosser gives a quick answer against man pressure, with the primary read progressing from the deep vertical clear to the dig, then down to the crossing route if the middle is congested.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high safety, this tells you if the dig route will have a clean throwing window or if a robber defender is lurking. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker or nickel defender sinks quickly into the passing lane the quarterback will likely check down to the crossing route instead of forcing the dig. Cover 2 shells get exposed because the deep vertical route occupies the safety and the corners are stuck underneath, opening the seam for the dig to settle in behind the linebackers. Cover 3 with a single deep defender struggles because that lone safety cannot cover both the vertical clear-out and the dig running through the middle void. Man coverage with a spy or lurking linebacker can jump the dig route if the quarterback holds the ball too long, so an aggressive user-controlled defender sitting in that throwing lane or a well-timed blitz that collapses the pocket before the vertical route clears is the best way to shut this concept down.
Usage Tips
Look at safety depth before the snap, if you see two deep safeties holding their landmarks the dig is going to sit down right in the middle void created by the vertical clear-out. Against single-high shells, trust the vertical route to occupy the deep middle defender and throw the dig with anticipation once your receiver breaks in behind the linebackers. Use the crossing route as your check-down answer versus man coverage or when the middle linebacker sits on the dig, it gives you a built-in rhythm throw so you are not forced to force the ball deep. This play hits best on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to play zone or split safety shells to protect against explosive plays. Pair Dagger with HB Blast or HB Option earlier in a drive to get defenses cheating linebackers up, then hit Dagger once you see linebackers sitting shallow, and mix in PA Slot In or Slants from the same set to keep defenders guessing on route depth.
