Defensive Reads

Watch the flat or curl defender's initial drop, if he sits flat instead of retreating into a deeper zone he can jump the route and blow up the screen before it develops. Post-snap, a user-controlled linebacker crashing downhill immediately at the snap is the biggest threat to this concept, since he can beat the blockers to the spot before the bubble receiver turns upfield. This play struggles against Cover 2 Man or any press man look on the slot receiver, since the lack of separation at the catch point kills the blocking angle before it starts. It beats Cover 3 and other zone shells where the corner and flat defender both bail deep, leaving a soft window underneath for the quick catch and run.
Usage Tips
Call this play against defenses showing soft zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where linebackers and corners bail deep at the snap, since that cushion is exactly what the bubble receiver needs to catch and turn upfield.
Throw the ball as soon as the slot receiver turns to face the QB, do not hold it, because any hesitation lets pursuit defenders close the throwing lane.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the flat defender to confirm he is not sitting on the route, and if you see a corner blitz or aggressive man press look elsewhere since this concept struggles against immediate pressure to the perimeter.
