PA Slot In from Weak I Slot uses play action to hold the linebackers before attacking all three levels of the defense. Off the fake, the outside receiver to the boundary runs a deep vertical clear-out (red route) while the slot receiver breaks inside on a square in (yellow route) that sits down in the intermediate zone, and a second yellow route works from the backfield or tight end alignment into the flat before turning upfield on a deep crosser toward the far sideline. The single blue route from the other outside receiver runs a shallow drag underneath while the fullback or H back releases into a quick check down flat route, giving the quarterback a layered progression: high low read starting with the square in against zone drops, then working to the deep crosser versus man leverage, with the shallow drag and check down as safety valves against pressure. This is primarily a play action zone beater built to punish linebackers who bite on the run fake.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells the quarterback the square in route will have to fit into a tight window between the corner and safety. If the linebackers show blitz depth or walk up to the line, expect a nano blitz or overload pressure, so key the fullback or check down release immediately since the quarterback may need a hot throw. User controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field (a lurking Mike linebacker) are the biggest threat to the square in route, so if you see a defender spy that zone, look to the deep crosser or vertical clear out instead. Cover 3 shells with a single high safety are vulnerable to the deep crosser sitting behind the flat defender, since the corner has to choose between the vertical and the crosser. Man coverage with no safety help over the slot is where this play is most explosive, since the square in and crosser combo creates natural rub leverage against man defenders trying to trail in coverage.
Usage Tips
Sell the play action by holding the left stick momentarily before dropping back, since the run fake is what opens the intermediate window for the square in route.
Use this on early downs (first or second and medium) when the defense is respecting Weak I run tendencies, especially after establishing HB Blast or Texans HB Lead earlier in the drive.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the strong safety and Mike linebacker, if they cheat up into the box expecting run, the deep crosser and vertical clear out will have room to work behind them.
Hot route the shallow drag receiver into a quick out if you see press man on the boundary, this gives you a rhythm throw away from a jammed release.
