Read FB Flat out of Weak I Slot (21 personnel) shows a two-receiver vertical stretch on the left with a corner route from the outside WR and a seam route from the slot, while the fullback releases into the flat as the primary checkdown. On the right side the TE runs a corner/flag route into the boundary, giving a high-low read against zone defenders. The FB flat route is the built-in outlet against blitz or if the deep routes are covered, making this a levels-based concept that functions as both a man beater on the corner routes and a zone beater with the FB sitting underneath soft coverage. Primary progression starts with the TE corner route, works to the two vertical routes on the left, and comes down to the FB flat as the safety valve.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink too deep in zone drops the FB flat will be wide open underneath. Identify Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap, since the corner routes on both sides are designed to split the cornerback and safety in those coverages. Key the flat defender or nickel corner, if they jump the FB route immediately it signals man coverage or a designed blitz that eliminates the checkdown. Look for user-controlled defenders sitting in the intermediate passing lanes on the left side, as they can jump the seam or corner route and bait a turnover. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 buzz calls where a safety rotates down to take away the flat and TE corner, so be ready to reset with a different concept if you see that rotation.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for two-high shells since the corner routes on both sides attack the space between the corner and safety in those coverages.
If you see man coverage with the fullback matched up against a linebacker, target the FB flat route immediately for a quick, easy conversion on early downs.
Use this play on 2nd and short to medium situations where defenses often play zone, since the FB flat exploits underneath zone drops from linebackers.
Hot route the backside slot vertical into a deeper route if you diagnose single-high coverage to stress the safety over the top.
