Breakdown

HB Blast is a downhill power run out of the Weak I Slot formation in 21 personnel, designed to hit the A gap or B gap immediately behind the fullback lead blocker. The diagram shows the fullback and offensive line climbing to seal the interior gaps while the halfback takes a direct handoff and follows the fullback's lead block, cutting off his read at the point of attack. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, and the primary read progression is a one cut, north-south decision based on which gap the fullback opens up first.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth pre-snap, if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow at 3 to 4 yards they are likely keying run and will flow hard to the fullback's block. A stacked box with 8 defenders in the tackle box is the clearest sign to abandon this play call and check to a pass. Post-snap, key the fullback's block target since that tells you which gap the halfback is committing to, and user the nearest linebacker to shoot that gap before the fullback can climb. Blitz packages that send extra defenders through the A gaps or a nano blitz timed to the snap will blow this play up before the fullback can even get a hat on a defender. Against a soft shell with safeties rotated back and linebackers reading run-pass keys late, this play hits fast for positive yardage before defenders can react.

Usage Tips

Run this play on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a guaranteed push up the middle against light boxes. Check the defensive front pre-snap and if you see a 6 or 7 man box with linebackers stacked tight, consider audibling to HB Option or Texans HB Lead instead since Blast struggles against loaded fronts. Use manual control on the fullback if possible to steer him into the biggest crease rather than trusting the AI blocking logic. Pair this play with PA Boot Slide or PA Flood earlier in a series so the defense respects the run action and starts biting on run fits, opening up explosive shots off the same formation look. Stick to one cut and go, avoid dancing behind the line since Blast is built for speed to the hole, not improvisation.
