PA Power O out of Singleback Y Off Trips is a play-action shot play that sells the Power O run scheme before working a vertical passing concept off the trips side. The offensive line pulls and shows down blocks to mirror the HB Power O run look, freezing linebackers and drawing the safety's eyes into the box while the QB opens to a route combo attacking the middle and deep half. This is primarily a zone beater designed to exploit Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenders who bite on the run fake, with the primary read starting on the deep crosser or seam route out of trips before working back to the underneath check down off play-action.
Identify the play-action window by watching whether linebackers step up on the run fake or stay disciplined in their zone drops. Against Cover 3, look for the middle linebacker to bite hard on the fake, opening the deep middle for your primary crosser or seam read. Against Cover 1 or Cover 0, expect a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone trying to jump the underneath route, so be ready to reset to your check down or scramble drill if that window closes. Check the corner alignment on the trips side before the snap: soft corners playing off coverage tip zone drops, while press alignment signals man coverage and a chance to work a rub or pick concept out of trips. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells where safeties stay deep regardless of the run fake, and it is vulnerable to overload blitzes from the trips side since the play-action fake slows your offensive line's ability to slide protection.
Run this play on early downs, ideally first or second and short to medium, when defenses expect HB Power O or Off Tackle based on prior run tendencies you have established. Check the safety depth pre-snap: if both safeties are sitting at 10-12 yards showing two-high, the play-action fake has less impact but the seam window against Cover 4 can still open late. If the safety creeps into the box or you see a single high safety walk down, that is your green light to trust the run fake and take the deep shot. Hot route the flat defender's man into a quick out if you see press man on the trips side to give yourself a built-in sight adjustment against blitz looks. Sequence this call after two or three reps of HB Power O and Counter Y in the same personnel and formation so linebackers start flowing hard on the mesh point, then hit them with this play-action shot to punish overaggressive run fits. Pair it in a series with PA Boot Rt to attack the opposite edge and keep the defense guessing on which direction the play-action rollout or pocket pass is coming from.
