Breakdown

Counter Y is a power run play out of Singleback Y Off Trips that pulls the backside guard and often a fullback or offset blocker across the formation to lead the HB through the hole on the frontside. The blocking scheme creates a misdirection look, with the offensive line initially flowing one way before the puller crosses to seal the point of attack, forcing linebackers to bite on the counter step and open up a crease. This is a base run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read for the HB is to press the counter track, read the puller's block on the first threat off the edge, and cut off that lead block into the alley created behind it.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the strong safety and Mike linebacker depth, if either is creeping down into the box before the snap, they are likely reading run flow and will threaten the counter lane quickly. Look for a defensive end or edge defender crashing hard upfield on the initial flow, this actually helps the counter since the puller can log or kick him out easily, but a disciplined edge that sits and reads kills the play design. Man coverage on the trips side often pulls extra defenders away from the box, so if you see man alignment with tight technique on the receivers, expect a lighter box and a bigger running lane. Watch for a Sam or Will linebacker executing a scrape exchange, this is the primary counter-killer since it replaces the puller's gap with a fresh, unblocked defender, if you see backside linebackers trained to scrape over the top, abandon the counter and check to HB Dive or HB Power O instead. Zone blitzes and nano blitzes that send extra rushers through the counter's frontside gap before the puller arrives will blow this play up, so if you see a heavy pre-snap walk-up from a linebacker or slot defender on that side, consider an audible or hot route adjustment.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a run-heavy personnel package early in a series to establish tendencies before hitting PA Power O or PA Boot Rt from the same Y Off Trips look for a devastating counter to the counter.

Watch pre-snap for linebacker depth and flow, if the Mike is stacked tight or crashing hard to one side pre-snap, the counter action will manipulate his gap discipline and create a bigger crease.

This play thrives against aggressive fronts and man coverage since it does not need route separation, but it struggles against disciplined zone fronts that stay home and read backfield flow, so mix in HB Dive and HB Power O to keep the front honest without tipping your hand.

Use manual controlled fullback or lead blocker logic if available, taking over the puller and manually selecting the cutback lane can help you beat a spy or an unblocked backside linebacker who reads counter quickly.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) or in short yardage situations where defenses expect pass concepts like Curls or Stick from the same trips look, since the counter action punishes overpursuit from slot coverage rotation.
