PA Boot Rt is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Y Off Trips that pulls the quarterback outside the pocket to the right on a naked or half-boot after selling the run fake to the HB. The trips side runs a combination of a deep out or corner and a shallow crosser while the backside Y (or a flat route) gives the boot side an underneath option, creating a high low read for the quarterback on the move. Primary progression starts with the deepest breaking route on the boot side, then works down to the flat or drag route underneath, making this a strong zone beater against teams that flow hard to the run fake or leave soft spots in the flat.
Read the strong safety and outside linebacker on the boot side before the snap, if they are sitting flat footed in a zone drop that is a green light for the deep out or corner route. Watch for a user controlled defender flowing into the flat immediately after the snap, this is the biggest threat to the underneath option and usually signals a lurk trying to bait the throw. Check linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake the intermediate crosser will be wide open behind them. This play struggles against Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 shells where the flat defender stays disciplined and the deep third corner sits on the out breaking route. Watch for edge blitzes or contain pressure from the boot side, since a fast defensive end crashing the rollout lane forces the quarterback to throw off platform or take a sack.
Run this on early downs like first or second and medium to keep the defense honest against your HB Power O and Off Tackle runs from the same set. Check the defense pre-snap for two deep safeties or a single high shell, since PA Boot Rt hits hardest against split safety zone looks that bite on the run action. If the corner on the boot side presses or shows man leverage, hot route the flat route into a quick out to beat the leverage before the rollout develops. Use this play after establishing HB Dive or HB Power O a few times so linebackers step up and vacate the flat and intermediate zones on the boot side.
