HB Power O out of Singleback Y Off Trips is a gap scheme run play built to create a numbers advantage at the point of attack. The backside guard pulls to lead through the hole while the play side double team blocks down, creating a wall for the fullback replacement (TE or pulling lineman) to seal the edge defender. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read for the HB is to press the play side hole and read the pulling blocker's kick out or lead block before deciding whether to bounce outside or stick it up inside the double team.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a run heavy front with linebackers stacked tight to the line, since that signals they expect gap runs and may stack the play side gap Watch for a slanting defensive line pre-snap or at the snap, since a hard slant into the pulling guard's path can blow up the play before the puller reaches the hole Key the play side linebacker's depth, if he is sitting shallow and reading the guard's pull he is likely to fill the hole quickly and you should consider bouncing the run outside User controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side pre-snap are a strong indicator of a run blitz call, which can beat Power O if the puller is not fast enough to reach the edge defender Look at safety rotation post-snap, if the free safety stays deep in a two high shell the box is lighter and Power O has room to work, but if he creeps down into the box pre-snap expect a crowded hole and reduced YAC
Check the box count before the snap and only run HB Power O into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box
Use the trips side of Y Off Trips to bait the defense into rotating a safety or nickel corner away from the run, then attack the vacated backside gap
Hot route the play side TE into a stalk block if you see an extra defender walked up on the edge to prevent a free hitter on the puller
Pair this play with PA Power O and PA Boot Rt from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the play-action look off identical formation and personnel
Best called on early downs, short yardage, or goal line situations where you want to force one on one blocking matchups and let your pulling guard control the edge defender
