HB Slip Screen out of Singleback Y Off Trips is a screen pass designed to slip the running back out to the flat while the offensive line initially shows pass protection before releasing to set up blockers downfield. This is a classic blitz beater and man beater, since aggressive pass rush and man coverage on the backfield often bite on the pump fake or drop too deep in coverage, leaving the flat wide open. The primary read progression is simple: the quarterback looks off the middle of the field for one beat to sell the pass, then immediately dumps the ball to the HB releasing out of the backfield, trusting the pulling linemen to clear a lane.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and blitz indicators, since screens like this die against disciplined defenses that keep linebackers at normal depth to spy the backfield. Watch for a user controlled defender flashing down near the line of scrimmage before the snap, since a smart human defender will often sit on the screen and blow it up for a loss. Zone coverage with linebackers sinking into shallow drops can be a problem, since those defenders can react quickly to the screen and close the passing lane before blockers get set. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined underneath zone defenders are the toughest shells to beat, since those linebackers stay patient and do not chase the play fake. Blitz packages that send extra rushers but leave the flat uncovered are exactly what this play exploits, so identify empty or overloaded blitz fronts pre-snap and trust the screen if you see numbers advantage to the flat.
Call this play when you diagnose an aggressive four man rush or a nano blitz package, since defensive linemen crashing hard upfield take themselves out of the screen lane entirely.
Use pre-snap motion sparingly here, since you want the defense to think this is a standard dropback pass out of Y Off Trips to keep linebackers reading pass and dropping into their zones.
If the defense shows Cover 0 or man coverage with no safety help, hot route the trips receivers into quick hitches or slants to hold the corners and free up the screen lane on the boundary side.
Best used on early downs or after establishing HB Draw and HB Dive from this same set, since defenses that respect the inside run game will bite harder on the screen action and vacate the flat.
