Breakdown

Mtn Zone Toss is an outside zone run out of Singleback 12 personnel that sends the HB toward the toss side behind a stretch blocking scheme, with the offensive line reach blocking and flowing laterally to seal the edge. The two TEs and the trips cluster alignment create natural extra blockers and misdirection to hold second-level defenders, forcing them to flow before the ball is even snapped. The primary read progression starts with the playside TE or wing blocker's block on the edge defender, then bounces to the cutback lane if the frontside gets strung out by pursuit.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if they are shaded toward the play call side pre-snap they are likely reading toss and will flow hard, setting up the cutback. Key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash down inside immediately the stretch blocking will seal them and open the alley for a big gain. Look for a scraping backside linebacker who reads zone flow and flattens hard down the line, this is the primary threat that shuts down cutback lanes if not accounted for. Check safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety with a stacked box signals run blitz and you should consider checking to a quick pass instead. User-controlled defenders flying to the edge immediately post-snap are a sign the defense is selling out for the toss, use the cutback design to make them pay for over-pursuing.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm you have a numbers advantage before snapping, since this play needs at least five blockers working in space to be effective.

Identify if the defense is running an inside run fit like a 3-4 under front, since a light box with linebackers cheating outside makes this an ideal cutback situation.

Hot route the backside TE into a shallow drag or keep him blocking if you are facing a heavy edge blitz look, this keeps a lead blocker home to seal the backside pursuit.

Pair this with Mtn HB Power and Mtn HB Draw from the same set to keep the defense guessing between zone stretch and gap schemes, both punish the same defenders for flowing too hard.

Best called on early downs or short yardage when you expect the defense to sit in a base run front, avoid this against dime or nickel packages that stack the box with speed at linebacker.
