PA Boot is a play-action rollout out of Singleback U Off Trips Cluster with 12 personnel that pulls the quarterback out of the pocket to the boot side while the offensive line executes run-action blocking to sell inside zone or power. The trips cluster bunches receivers to one side to create natural rub picks against man coverage, with a tight end typically working a flat or drag route underneath as the QB's first read while a deeper crosser or corner route develops behind it. This is a man beater at its core, since the traffic in the cluster disrupts man defenders trying to trail through picks, and the rollout gives the quarterback a run-pass option if the edge is unblocked. Primary progression starts with the underneath flat/drag route, then works to the intermediate crosser, and finishes with the quarterback's legs if both are covered.
Watch for a hard edge defender who stays home on the boot side, since disciplined ends or outside linebackers can blow this play up by containing the quarterback rollout. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells before the snap, since zone defenders sitting in the boot lane can jump the shallow flat route and take away the first read. Look for linebackers biting on the run fake. If they flow hard to the play-action mesh point, the intermediate crosser behind them opens up as a big chunk-play window. Check for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow flat or drag zone, since a smart user can rob the primary read and force the quarterback to hold the ball and scramble. Man coverage with press corners is where this play shines, since the trips cluster creates natural traffic, but disciplined zone match defenses that stay patient in their drops will squeeze the throwing windows.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) so the play-action fake actually holds linebackers and creates honest run/pass conflict.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Two high safeties usually mean the boot side flat route is open in the void, while a single high safety means the defense is more likely selling out to stop the run fake, so hot route the flat man into a deeper option if needed.
Use the trips cluster's natural rub to your advantage against man coverage. If you see man defenders press align, expect the pick to spring the shallow route open almost immediately.
Pair PA Boot with Mtn PA Draw and Inside Zone earlier in a series so the run action is credible. Once the defense starts keying run fits fast, PA Boot punishes overaggressive linebacker flow.
If the defensive end crashes down hard on the run fake, take off and run with the quarterback since the edge is often unaccounted for on the boot side.
