Mtn PA Y Corner is a play-action shot play out of Singleback U Off Trips Cluster designed to attack single high safety looks and aggressive linebackers who bite on the run fake. The mountain motion and play-action mesh sell inside zone, and the Y (tight end) works a corner route to the boundary while the trips side occupies the defense with a mix of shorter breaking routes to hold underneath defenders. This is a man beater first, since the corner route from the Y creates natural separation against linebackers or safeties in man, but it also stresses zone defenses that widen their flow to the run fake, leaving the corner window open in the deep quarter.
Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high tells you the corner route has one-on-one leverage in the deep quarter. Watch the linebackers at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake and flow toward the mesh point, the throwing lane to the Y corner route opens up immediately. Cover 3 with a hard flowing strong safety is vulnerable here because the corner route sits in the deep third window vacated by run support rotation. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells that keep both safeties deep, since the corner route runs directly into a safety who never bit on the fake, forcing a checkdown read. User-controlled defenders sitting the flat or lurking underneath can jump the shorter trips routes, so track the user defender's positioning to know if the quick game or the deep corner is the better answer on that snap.
Use this play on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, when defenses are more likely to respect the run fake and play downhill.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shell is the green light since it means the corner route only has to beat one defender to that side.
Hot route the trips side into quick hitters or hold blocks if you need extra protection against pressure, since the play-action fake takes time to develop and a free rusher will blow it up.
Pair this call with Mtn HB Power or Mtn HB Draw earlier in a series so the defense keys run fakes and linebackers start crashing downhill, then hit them with this shot play once they are conditioned.
Watch for cornerback depth on the Y side, if the corner is playing tight press man with no safety help over the top, the corner route has a layup throwing window against man coverage.
