PA Dagger U Cross is a play-action shot play out of Singleback U Off Trips Cluster designed to attack the middle and deep zones with a vertical clear-out paired with an under-crosser. The dagger concept sends a deep seam or post route from the trips side to stretch the safeties while an underneath crossing route from the opposite side settles into the void left behind, and the play-action fake helps freeze linebackers to open passing lanes. This is a man and zone beater, effective versus both because the deep route occupies the cornerback and safety while the cross exploits the seam that opens once linebackers bite on the run fake. The primary read progression starts with the deep dagger route to see if the safety bites on the play-action, then works down to the U cross running underneath, and finishes with any checkdown or flat option if both are covered.
Check safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety indicates man coverage or a Cover 3 shell that leaves the deep route in a vulnerable one on one Watch linebacker depth after the snap, if they step up hard on the play-action fake the underneath cross will have a wide throwing lane Identify Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap since these coverages typically have help over the top and will squeeze the deep dagger route, forcing you to rely on the cross User controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat can jump the U cross route, so be ready to look off or work to the checkdown Watch for a linebacker or slot corner blitzing off the edge, since this play does not have a fast quick game answer, an unblocked rusher can force an early throw or sack
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since that tells you the deep dagger route has a one on one matchup down the field
If you see two deep safeties, prioritize the U cross underneath because the deep shot will likely be capped
Use the play-action fake to freeze linebackers, especially against defenses that key hard on run tendencies from 12 personnel
Hot route the underneath crosser to a shallow drag if you are facing an aggressive blitz and need a quicker outlet
Pair this play with Mtn HB Draw and Mtn PA Draw earlier in a series to sell run action, then call PA Dagger U Cross once the defense starts creeping linebackers up
