Breakdown

Stick out of Singleback U Off Trips Cluster is a quick-game passing concept built around the trips side stick routes paired with a backside option route from the isolated receiver or tight end. The concept pairs stick (a shallow out or curl settle from the slot) with an underneath flat route and a corner or seam breaking route from the trips stack, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch on defenders in the box. This is a zone beater at heart, designed to sit down in the soft spots of zone coverage, though it also holds up against man thanks to natural picks created by the cluster alignment, and the primary read starts with the flat defender before working up to the stick sitting behind him.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, a two high shell with soft corners tells you the stick window will be open underneath. Post-snap, key the flat defender first since his leverage tells you whether the stick sits down inside or works to the flat. Watch for Cover 3 sky or buzz rotations where the safety fills the hole underneath, this alignment can take away the stick read and force you to the backside option route. Man coverage with a lurking linebacker in the middle of the field is the biggest threat, since that defender can undercut the stick route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Nano blitzes or a delayed blitz from the boundary linebacker can pressure this quickly since it relies on the offensive line holding up in max protect looks, so check your protection against overload fronts.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to third and medium since the stick route settles right at the sticks and gives you a built in conversion target.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a two high shell or single high, because stick against two high zone (Cover 2 or Cover 4) is where this concept shines the most.

If you see man coverage with no safety help over the trips cluster, hot route the outside receiver on a quick out or slant to attack the natural rub created by the bunch alignment.

Combine this with Mtn PA Y Corner or PA Flood from the same set so the defense has to respect both the quick passing game and the deeper shot plays off similar formation looks.

Watch for user linebackers sitting the stick window, if you see a defender flashing down to jump the route, check it down to the flat or backside option instead of forcing the throw.
