PA Boot from Singleback Trio 11 personnel is a play-action rollout that boots the quarterback to the right, off a fake handoff to sell run action. The route concept features two deep vertical routes from the outer receivers on the left side, a deep out that breaks toward the sideline off a vertical stem from the inner slot, and a flat route from the running back releasing to the right toward the boot direction, with a check release defender crossing underneath. This is a play-action shot play that stresses zone defenders with vertical stems before breaking, and the primary read progression starts with the deep out route as the QB rolls right, then works down to the flat route as the checkdown if the corner route is not open.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers crashing down on the run fake signal man coverage or an aggressive run blitz that this boot action can exploit. Identify the flat defender pre-snap because if he widens too early to cover the running back, the deep out route behind him becomes a live throwing window. Key on the deep safety rotation post-snap, if the safety stays home in the middle of the field it signals zone coverage that this play beats with the outside vertical routes drawing coverage away from the boot side. Beware of a user linebacker spying the quarterback boot lane since a disciplined spy can blow up the rollout and force a negative play. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with slow linebacker drops are the most vulnerable, while disciplined Cover 2 with a hard flat defender squatting on the boot side can take away both the flat and the deep out.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or in play-action friendly counts like second and short to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers. Check the safety alignment pre-snap: single high shells with the safety cheating to the deep middle open up the deep out route on the boot side. Hot route the running back to release quicker into the flat if you anticipate a blitz, since the boot action needs extra protection time. Pair this with HB Dive or HB Zone Wk earlier in a drive to condition the defense to respect the run fake, then dial up PA Boot once linebackers start biting hard on run action. Roll with the quarterback using the right stick to extend the play if the primary read is covered and look for the flat route as your escape valve.
