Breakdown

HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Singleback Trio with 11 personnel, showing three receivers stacked wide to one side and a tight end tucked into the formation for an extra gap blocker. The offensive line executes a weak side zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal off linebackers, while the HB presses the weak side hole and reads the flow of the defensive line before picking his lane. This is a pure run play designed to attack light boxes and beat zone or man fronts that overcommit to the strength of the formation, with the primary read progression being backside cutback lane first, then bounce outside if the edge is sealed.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive tackles shading hard to the trio side, since that signals a heavy front designed to shut down the strong side and leaves the backside cutback open. Key the weak side linebacker depth at the snap, if he is flowing too fast to the play side the cutback lane behind him becomes the money read. Beware nano blitzes or edge pressure from the weak side, since a fast off the edge defender can blow up the zone before the line gets a chance to climb. Look for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap, which indicates run support and should push you toward a cutback or a check to a play-action or RPO instead. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra flow to the run side is a green light, since it usually means fewer defenders are account for gap integrity against inside zone.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to avoid getting stacked up for a loss.

Identify if the defense shifts its front toward the trio side, since that opens up the weak side cutback lane this play is designed to hit.

Use the HB Zone Wk early in a series to set up HB Dive and HB Toss out of the same Trio look, forcing the defense to respect multiple gap runs from identical alignment.

If you see linebackers creeping down pre-snap expecting run, motion or check to Bubble Screen or RPO Stretch Alert Bubble to punish overaggressive run fits.

On the stick, patiently press the hole and trust the zone blocking to develop rather than trying to bounce outside immediately.
