The diagram shows a deep corner route clearing out to the top of the screen, a flat route sitting underneath breaking outside, and two crossing routes underneath that occupy the middle of the field, creating a natural triangle stretch on the flat defender. Blocking is a standard drop back protection, keeping the backfield clean for a quick progression read that starts with the flat route, works to the crossing routes sitting down in the void, and hits the corner if a defender bites on the underneath levels.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which invites a jump on the flat route with the corner defender. Watch the flat defender's depth at the snap, since Spot lives in the soft spot of Cover 3 and a slow-rotating flat defender opens the window for the sit route. If linebackers show hard inside shade with no middle hook defender, the crossing routes will be uncontested, so sink a linebacker or user a defender into the shallow crossing lanes immediately. Man coverage with underneath help defeats the rub action on the crossers, so bring a shallow zone defender across to disrupt the pick before the routes settle. A disguised Cover 1 robber sitting in the intermediate middle can jump both crossing routes at once, taking away the easy completions and forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or third and short since the flat and settle routes give you a high floor completion if the sit route is open.
Check the corner and safety depth pre-snap: if you see a single high safety rotating hard to the boundary, expect Cover 3 and trust the flat to crosser progression.
Hot route the flat man into a quick out if you are facing a Cover 2 corner sitting on the flat, since the crossing route underneath becomes the primary answer instead.
Pair this with Verticals or PA Boot from the same Trio set to keep the defense honest on the deep corner route once they start jumping the shallow crossers.
Against man coverage, the pick action from the crossing routes creates natural rub separation, so key on whether the defense is in man before locking onto the flat route first.
