Verticals from Singleback Trio 11 personnel sends four receivers vertically up the field, with the two outside receivers running straight seams up the sideline, the slot receiver breaking outside into a corner-post angle, and the TE releasing to the flat before turning upfield on a deep out. The HB stays in to check block off the blue route showing him releasing up and out of the backfield as a check-release option. This is a classic Four Verts man and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read progression starting outside to inside: work the seam routes first against single high safety leverage, then come back to the TE's corner route or the check-release HB if the underneath defenders sink deep.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for single high safety alignment, since this tells you the defense is vulnerable to the two seam routes splitting the deep middle. Watch cornerback depth at the snap. If corners are playing off man technique, expect the seams to win quickly before the safety can help over the top. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop. If he sinks with the seam routes in Cover 3, look to the TE's corner route or the check-release HB for a soft spot in the defense. Beware disguised Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, since the extra deep defenders can squeeze the seams and force a longer holding pattern in the pocket. User-controlled safeties baiting a deep throw are the biggest threat, so read their leverage before committing to a seam throw over the top.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or third and long when you expect a single high safety look, since Four Verts stresses the deep middle defender and forces a choice.
Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is showing two high or one high shell. Against two high, target the seams between the corner and safety before the safety can rotate over the top.
Hot route the check-release HB into a flat or drag if you see man coverage with no underneath help, since this creates an easy answer versus blitz looks.
Pair this play with Slants or Shoot earlier in a drive to bait linebackers into sitting shallow, then hit Verticals once the defense starts jumping short routes.
Against Cover 2, throw the seam or the TE's corner route with anticipation before the safety can get depth, since Verticals is designed to split the deep defenders.
