HB Dive out of Singleback East (12 personnel) is a straight downhill run play that sends the HB directly through the A-gap behind the center and guard. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with double-team combo blocks at the point of attack, while both TEs stay attached to the formation to seal the edges and prevent backside pursuit. This is a run play designed to win with numbers and angles up front rather than deception, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is inside first (A-gap crease), then bounce to whichever side the linebacker flow opens up.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment. If both inside linebackers are stacked tight over the guards, this play is likely to get stuffed at the line. Watch for a safety creeping down into the box before the snap, which signals run support and a potential eight-man front designed to stop interior runs. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and nose. If they are two-gapping and holding their ground rather than getting pushed, the dive lane will not open. User-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill immediately after the snap indicate a defense selling out to stop the run, which sets up cutback lanes to the backside A-gap or B-gap. This play struggles against nano blitz packages and interior zero blitz calls where extra rushers crash the A-gap untouched, so respect pre-snap blitz indicators like linebackers walked up on the line.
Usage Tips
Use this play on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a quick, high-percentage gain of one to three yards.
Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has stacked eight or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to a play-action pass to punish overcommitment.
Pair HB Dive with HB Off Tackle and Counter U in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing on gap direction and force them to hesitate on run fits.
Mix in Play Action or PA Boot Slide after establishing HB Dive a few times so the linebackers start biting on run fakes, opening up throwing lanes underneath.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz looks with a linebacker showing in the A-gap pre-snap, since the interior blocking has no answer for an unblocked extra rusher.
