Y-dig Inside Hook is a Singleback 12 personnel pass concept built around the tight end running a deep dig across the middle of the field while the other receivers work hooks and shorter crossers to hold linebackers and clear underneath space. This is a zone beater at its core, designed to attack soft spots between the second and third level defenders, especially against Cover 2 and Cover 3 zones where the dig can settle into the void behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties. The primary read progression starts with the Y-dig running to the intermediate middle of the field, then works to the inside hook routes underneath if the dig window is closed by a sinking safety or a robber linebacker.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties versus one deep safety, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells leave more grass for the dig to settle into compared to a single high Cover 1 or Cover 3 look. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard and wide into zone drops the dig has room to work, but if they stay shallow and shuffle with vision on the quarterback they are sitting on the dig route. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the tight end in man coverage looks, a fast, physical defender in man coverage can disrupt the dig at the break point and this play should be avoided against tight man matchups. Post-snap, respect the lurking user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field, this is the biggest threat to the dig route and often baits quarterbacks into a turnover throw. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers up the middle can collapse the pocket before the dig fully develops, so recognize A-gap pressure pre-snap and be ready to check down to the hook routes quickly.
Usage Tips
Diagnose the safety shell before the snap. Two deep safeties invite the dig to sit in the honey hole behind linebackers, while a single high safety means you need to check the hook routes first since the dig will run into a defender.
Use motion or a quick glance to identify if linebackers are sinking into zone drops or if you are seeing man coverage with a linebacker matched on the tight end, since the dig loses value against tight man coverage from an athletic linebacker.
Hot route the underneath hook routes to flats or quick outs if you diagnose Cover 3 with fast-flowing corners jumping short routes, this keeps the concept alive without forcing a bad throw into the dig.
Pair this play with Play Action or PA Boot Slide earlier in a series to get linebackers biting on run fakes, which opens up the dig window even wider on repeat calls of Y-dig Inside Hook.
Best used on second and medium to second and long, giving you a full route tree develop time without needing an immediate checkdown, and it pairs well after HB Off Tackle or Inside Zone Split to set up run-pass conflict for linebackers.
