HB Wham is a power run play out of Singleback East 12 personnel that pulls a blocker across the formation to kick out the first threat off the edge, giving the fullback or extra TE a wham block on the play side defensive end. The line blocks down while the runner takes a downhill angle behind the pulling blocker, hitting the gap created by the kick out block. This is a run play designed to overload one side with double team and gap displacement, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read for the ball carrier is to press the hole, read the wham block on the edge defender, then decide between cutting inside off the double team or bouncing outside if the kick out block wins clean.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end pre snap, if he is lined up wide or crashing hard off the edge the wham blocker will have an easier angle to seal him. Identify linebacker depth before the snap, stacked or downhill linebackers can beat this play to the point of attack if they read the pulling blocker fast. This run struggles against gap exchange fronts or defenses that stunt the defensive end inside, since the kick out blocker can whiff if the assignment shifts. Look for a lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the alley, that user controlled defender is the biggest threat to blow up the cutback lane. Heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge before the wham block develops can beat this play behind the line of scrimmage, so avoid calling it into known all out pressure looks.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses expect a balanced call out of 12 personnel. Check the box count pre snap: if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to HB Slip Screen or PA Boot Slide to punish overcommitment. Use the wham blocker as your key, if the defensive end crashes down hard the cutback lane opens, if he sits the runner should hug the double team block. Pair this with HB Off Tackle and HB Dive from the same set so linebackers cannot key on the pulling blocker every snap, keeping run fits honest. Against aggressive fronts with 3-4 or 4-3 under looks, this play thrives because the kick out block removes the primary edge defender from the play before he can react.
