Inside Zone Split is a base run play out of Singleback 12 personnel with two TEs on the line and split receivers stretching the field vertically at each sideline. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working combo blocks at the point of attack and flowing laterally to seal running lanes based on defensive front movement. The HB takes the handoff and reads his blocks from the inside out, with the primary read being the frontside gap before bouncing outside if the backside cutback lane opens.
Defensive Reads
Read the linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are stacked tight behind the defensive line expect fast flow and a crashing front that can be countered with a cutback. Watch for a run blitz or nano blitz look where a defender creeps into the A or B gap right before the snap, this often signals an aggressive attack that Inside Zone Split can gash if you get the cutback read right. Identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 look since heavier fronts with extra defenders in the box will clog running lanes and force you to check to a pass. Key the safeties post-snap, if they stay deep and do not crash down quickly this play has room to break into the second level. This play struggles against gap-control schemes and aggressive edge defenders who read zone blocking and shoot gaps immediately, so avoid running it into defenses that consistently key run action.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only run Inside Zone Split into light boxes with six or fewer defenders to avoid a stacked front. Use your fullback or TE motion if available to identify if the defense shifts into a run blitz look before the snap. Pair this play with HB Off Tackle and Counter U in the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run direction and force them to respect multiple gap threats. Mix in HB Draw from the same personnel to disguise your run tendencies since the pre-snap look is nearly identical. Use this on early downs, especially first and ten or second and short, to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play action shots later in the drive.
