Verticals X Cross is a four verticals concept out of Singleback 12 personnel with a shallow crosser worked in from the backside. Both outside receivers and the inside slot receiver stem straight up the field to stress the deep zones, while the third route from the bunch breaks off into a deep crosser working across the formation, and the running back releases into the flat as a checkdown outlet. This is a pass play built to beat both man and zone coverage, with the primary read starting on the deep crosser working across the field before progressing to the vertical stems on the numbers.
Check pre-snap safety alignment: two deep safeties with depth signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, meaning the crosser is the highest percentage throw underneath. One high safety pre-snap usually means Cover 1 or Cover 3, so attack the vertical seams before the safety can rotate over the top. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop from the middle linebacker signals a zone drop that can be exploited by the crosser sitting in the void. Man coverage is exposed by the vertical stems if your receivers win early separation, especially against slower linebackers matched up on the crosser. Beware of user lurk defenders sitting in the crosser lane, since a smart user playing a robber technique can jump the throw if you stare it down; use pump fakes or look off the initial read.
Use this play on early downs or obvious passing situations where you have time to let the crosser develop across the field.
Identify the coverage shell pre-snap: against single high safety looks, prioritize the vertical seams since the deep middle will be occupied by one defender.
Against two high safety shells, the crosser is your primary answer since it sits underneath both safeties and in front of any Cover 2 hole defenders.
Hot route the running back into a wheel or delayed release if you diagnose a blitz, since the flat route is your last line checkdown against pressure.
Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or HB Draw earlier in a drive to slow down aggressive linebackers and safeties who key on the vertical stems, then hit this shot play once they start creeping up.
