Smash Slot Post is a classic Cover 2 beater out of Singleback East 12 personnel, pairing an outside corner route with an underneath flat route from the same side while the slot receiver runs a post to attack the middle of the field. The corner route occupies the deep safety on that side while the flat route holds the underneath defender low, opening a window for the slot post to split the safeties or settle behind a dropping linebacker. This is a straight dropback pass concept, not play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the slot post working to the corner route, then checks down to the flat as the outlet against underneath pressure.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety depth and width at the snap, if both safeties bail deep and wide to cover the corner routes the post window in the middle opens up immediately. Watch the flat defender, if he sinks with the corner route instead of staying low, the flat route becomes an easy checkdown against Cover 2. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender dropping into the deep middle hole, this is the primary threat that can jump the slot post and force a turnover. Against Cover 3 or single high looks, the post has less room to work since the deep middle defender has help underneath, favor the flat or corner route instead. Beware disguised Cover 2 man under blitzes where the slot receiver gets jammed at the line, this delays the post release and kills the timing of the whole concept.

Usage Tips

Look for two safeties pre-snap to confirm Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells before snapping since this concept is designed specifically to punish that middle of field open coverage.

If the defense shows single high safety, hot route the slot post into a shorter option like a slant or dig to avoid throwing into a crowded middle of the field.

Use this play on early downs or second and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure.

Pair Smash Slot Post with Y-dig Inside Hook or Dig Hi Lo from the same set to keep defenders guessing between deep middle post shots and intermediate crossing routes.

Against man coverage, motion the slot receiver pre-snap to get a free release on the post and create separation before the corner route defender can help.
