Trail out of Singleback East Tight (13 personnel) is a man beater built around a trail/drag concept designed to create natural picks against tight man coverage. The tight end and slot receiver run crossing patterns at different depths, with one route dragging underneath while a second breaks in behind it, forcing defenders to fight through traffic and lose contact leverage. Primary read progression starts with the underneath drag, then works to the trailing crosser, and finishes with the backside vertical or comeback as a late-window checkdown against zone drops.
Press man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness for this concept since the crossing routes generate natural rub picks that break contact. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow crossing lane, that lurk technique can jump the drag route and turn it into a live ball defensive play. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebacker drops can clog the crossing lanes and force the quarterback to hold the ball, so check flow of the underneath zone defenders before committing to the drag. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge with no spy can be countered by the checkdown route, since the trail concept develops quickly and beats most nano blitz timing if the quarterback gets the ball out on time. If the defense shows two high safeties rotating late into man coverage, expect the trailing crosser to be the most open option since the second level defender has to sort through the pick before recovering.
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as cornerbacks in a tight press alignment or safeties rotated to one side, since Trail thrives when defenders have to run through traffic to stay on their assignment.
Motion the tight end or slot receiver before the snap to confirm man coverage, if the defender follows across the formation you know you can trust the drag and crosser to separate.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out against zone shells to give yourself an immediate answer if the trail combo gets clogged by underneath linebackers.
Pair this play with PA Boot or TE Option in the same set so the defense has to respect both the play-action boot action and the traditional dropback trail concept, keeping second level defenders honest.
Use Trail on second and medium to third and short situations where defenses often show man coverage with a single high safety, since the natural pick action gives you a high completion rate against tight man technique.
