HB Counter WK out of Singleback East Tight is a power run play built on misdirection, pulling the weak side guard and tackle across the formation to lead through the point of attack while the fullback or tight end kicks out the edge defender. The backfield action gets the running back moving one way before he plants and follows his pullers back against the grain, punishing defenses that flow hard with the initial step. This is strictly a ground and pound run play with no pass option, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is patience: press the counter action, read the puller's block on the first threat (usually the edge defender or first force player), then decide whether to bend it wide off the kick out block or cut up inside off the lead blocker's block on the linebacker.
Pre-snap, check the linebacker depth: linebackers sitting shallow and creeping toward the line are keying run and will flow hard with the counter step, which is exactly what this play wants to exploit. Post-snap, watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker's first move: if he crashes inside upfield he opens the kick out lane, but if he sits and reads he can blow up the pulling blockers. User controlled defenders who spy the backfield or sit in the hole rather than flowing with the fake are the biggest threat to this play, since they erase the natural cutback lane the counter action creates. A defense in a heavy front with extra defenders stacked in the box and linebackers reading the mesh point rather than the flow will shut this play down by staying home for the cutback. Look for safeties cheating down into the box pre-snap since that signals run support that can rally to the counter before the pullers get set, forcing the back to bounce it outside early.
Run this play when the defense is showing a fast flow front or aggressive linebackers who key the mesh point and crash hard, since counter action punishes overpursuit.
Use it on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest and set up your play action shots later in the drive.
Watch the play side edge defender pre-snap: if he is crashing down hard on every snap, this counter will hit for a big gap because his own aggression removes him from the play.
Pair HB Counter WK with PA Boot or PA Fl Stretch from the same East Tight set so the defense has to respect both the counter run action and the play action boot off similar formation and personnel.
Avoid calling this into a stacked box with extra defenders near the line unless you have a lead blocker advantage, since the counter's delayed timing gives extra defenders time to read and fill the cutback lane.
