HB Plunge out of Singleback East Tight is a downhill dive run designed to attack the interior of the defense with minimal misdirection. The offensive line fires out for double team blocks at the point of attack, with the fullback or extra blocker (via the 13 personnel tight ends) sealing the first level to create a vertical crease. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression is: identify the first crease off the double team, then decide between the A gap and the B gap based on where the linebacker flow commits.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and count the box. A single high safety with six in the box signals run support is already loaded, making this a tough matchup for HB Plunge. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line in a 46 or heavy front, this play will get gang tackled for minimal gain. Man coverage on the perimeter does not affect this play much since it lives inside, but watch for a Mike linebacker blitzing straight up the middle, which is the biggest defensive counter. Zone defenses that keep linebackers in shallow drops but do not add extra run support are the most vulnerable, since the interior gaps stay clean longer. If you see the defense show Cover 0 or an all out blitz look pre-snap, expect immediate penetration and be ready to bounce the run outside rather than forcing it inside.
Use HB Plunge in short yardage and goal line situations where you need one or two yards and want to avoid negative plays from outside runs getting strung out. Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has six or more defenders in the box, this play becomes risky and you should consider audibling to a play-action shot instead. Take control of your fullback or lead blocker right after the snap and manually seal the first linebacker you see filling the gap, since the CPU blocking logic can miss assignments against stacked fronts. Pair this play with PA Boot or TE Option earlier in a series to get the defense biting on run fits, then come back to HB Plunge once you have seen the linebackers cheat downhill. Avoid calling this on third and long, it is strictly a hard yardage and clock control tool, not an explosive play.
