HB Smash out of Singleback East Tight is a classic Cover 2 beater built on the smash concept, pairing a short flat route with a deep corner route on the same side of the field to stretch the cornerback and safety vertically. The 13 personnel grouping keeps two tight ends on the field for extra protection and play-action credibility, while the backside typically runs a dig or crosser to occupy the middle linebacker and give you a check down against man coverage. Your primary read progression starts with the corner route against the deep safety, works down to the flat route if the corner sits on the smash, and finishes with the backside crosser or check down to the HB if both outside options are covered.
Look for two safeties splitting the field pre snap, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells you the corner route has a natural window against the flat defender Watch the cornerback's depth and hips at the snap, since a corner sitting flat footed in the flat is baiting the smash and a user controlled defender may be lurking to jump the corner route Cover 3 with a deep third safety sitting over the top shuts this play down quickly, so if you see single high safety rotation, check into a different concept or attack the backside crosser immediately Key the middle linebacker's drop on the snap, since a linebacker sinking hard into the flat area signals Tampa 2 or a robber technique that can undercut the shallow route Blitz packages that send extra pressure off the edge force a quick decision, so if you see stacked outside linebackers or a nano blitz alignment presnap, get the ball out to the flat or check down before the corner route has time to develop
Pre snap, identify whether the safety is showing two high or rotating to a single high shell because Smash lives on Cover 2 and struggles against Cover 3 with a deep third defender sitting on the corner route
If you see man coverage with the corner playing tight to the flat receiver, hot route the flat route into a slant or speed out to create instant separation instead of forcing the smash window
Use this play on second and medium to third and long situations where the defense expects a run or a shorter route concept, since the corner route needs time to develop against a Cover 2 shell
Combine HB Smash with PA Boot or PA Fl Stretch from the same East Tight set to sell run action first, then come back to Smash once the defense starts loading the box against HB Plunge and HB Counter WK
Motion the backside tight end or use TE Option pre snap to diagnose man versus zone before the snap, which tells you whether to trust the corner route or lean on the flat and check down
