HB Stretch out of Singleback Deuce Close Tilt is an outside zone run that sends the offensive line flowing laterally toward the play side while the HB reads blocks from the backside cutback lane all the way to the edge. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and it leans on the TE and wing blockers from the 21 personnel grouping to seal the edge or create a natural cutback lane. The primary read progression is playside cutback, then bend, then bounce outside, with the ball carrier reading the first down lineman’s block off the snap before deciding whether to press the alley or take it to the sideline.
Watch the pre-snap alignment of the defensive ends and outside linebackers, if they are crashing hard down inside the edge is open for a bounce. Key the flow of the middle linebacker at the snap, if he overpursues toward the play side flow the cutback lane behind him becomes the higher percentage read. Identify user-controlled defenders lurking in the backfield or spying the mesh point, since a smart user player will sit on the cutback lane and blow up this run before it develops. This play struggles against gap-sound fronts with disciplined defensive tackles who hold their gaps, and it is especially vulnerable to a well timed inside run blitz that fills the cutback lane immediately. Look for safety rotation post-snap, if a safety is filling downhill quickly it signals run recognition and you should bounce outside rather than trying to press the cutback.
Run HB Stretch when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, especially against two high safety shells that hint at zone coverage on the back end.
Use manual control on the HB immediately after the snap so you can press the line of scrimmage and read the block of the first down lineman before committing to a lane.
Pair this play with Mtn HB Misdirection Lt and Mtn Zone Toss in the same set to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction since all three plays start with similar backfield action.
Avoid calling this against stacked fronts or when the defense shows heavy inside blitz looks pre-snap, since fast flowing linebackers can string the run out before the blockers get set.
On early downs in normal distance situations this play is ideal for keeping defenses honest before dialing up HB Dive or PA Sprint HB Flat from the same formation to punish overaggressive run fits.
