Mtn Zone Fake Jet is a zone run play out of Singleback Deuce Close Tilt with 21 personnel that sells a jet sweep fake before the HB works downhill on a zone blocking scheme. The offensive line flows laterally to set up cutback lanes while the jet motion man occupies flow defenders and second level linebackers, forcing them to hesitate on their run fits. Primary read progression starts with the playside read blocker (typically the offensive tackle or TE), then bends to the backside cutback lane if the playside gets clogged by an unblocked defender or crashing DE.
Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow and reading run fits aggressively they are more likely to bite on the jet fake and vacate their gap. Watch for a defensive end or edge defender staying home instead of chasing motion, that is a sign the defense has practiced against jet sweep fakes and will not be fooled easily. This run scheme is most vulnerable to gap or man blitz packages that send an extra defender through the backside cutback lane before the zone can reseal it. Against base 4-3 or 3-4 zone fronts with linebackers flowing hard to motion, the cutback lane opens up fast and this play beats those looks consistently. If the defense shows a stacked box with safeties creeping down pre-snap, expect the fake to get less respect since the defense is already loaded to defend both run designs. User-controlled linebackers who stay disciplined and shuffle instead of committing to motion will erase the cutback read, so look for that hesitation before committing to a lane.
Use pre-snap motion with the jet man to bait linebackers into flowing hard, then check the box count before the snap to confirm you have a numbers advantage in the run fit.
This play punishes defenses that key hard on jet sweep motion, so mix it in after running actual Mtn Jet Sweep or Mtn PA Jet Sweep a few times to condition the defense to overreact.
On early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) this hides well because defenses expect balance, and the fake keeps aggressive linebackers from filling downhill immediately.
If you see a defender crash hard on jet motion pre-snap, manually take control of your HB and be ready to bounce it outside since the alley will be wide open.
Pair this with Mtn PA Misdirection and Mtn HB Misdirection Lt in the same drive to layer misdirection concepts and keep second level defenders guessing on run fits.
