Mtn PA Jet Sweep is a play-action shot play built off the jet sweep run action in the Singleback Deuce Close Tilt set. The jet motion man rides across the formation to sell the sweep fake, freezing linebackers and pulling flow safeties toward the boundary while the offensive line executes run blocking to disguise the deep concept forming behind it. This is a man and zone beater built for explosive plays over the middle, and the primary read progression starts with the deep mountain (vertical seam or post) route created by the play-action shot, then works down to the intermediate crosser or dig that develops as the second read, and finally to the check down or flat route released off the fake for a safety valve if the top of the coverage stays sound.
Watch the free safety depth and leverage before the snap, if he creeps into the box expecting run support this play-action shot will expose Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells behind him. Key the linebackers at the snap, if they step up to fill run gaps or flow hard with the jet motion the deep mountain route and intermediate crosser will both have room to operate. Beware disguised Cover 4 or Cover 6 looks where the safeties hold their depth and do not bite on the fake, this can take away the deep shot and force you into the checkdown read. User controlled defenders sitting in a deep third or playing lurk technique near the crosser can jump the route if the quarterback stares it down too long, work through the progression with your eyes off the primary target. Look for blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge since the run fake can hold blockers in place, if the offensive line is not accounting for a hot rusher this play-action shot can turn into a costly sack.
Use pre-snap motion with the jet man and watch how the defense reacts, if a linebacker or safety cheats with the motion you have a numbers advantage on the play-action shot behind it.
Identify single high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 before the snap since the deep mountain route will have a soft spot to attack if the free safety bites on the run fake.
Hot route the check down or flat receiver into a deeper route if you diagnose zone coverage with no underneath linebacker threat, this turns the safety valve into an explosive gain.
